5 Tips From a Nutritionist to Help You Reach Your 5-Veg-a-Day!

Less than 5% of Australians eat enough vegetables…

Why does this matter?

Because vegetables are nutrition superheroes… They’re high in fibre, they’re packed with vitamins and minerals and your gut microbiome just wouldn’t be the same without them!

The gut is central to your immune health and can have an impact on your fertility, your mental health, and even the health of your future baby.

Even as a nutritionist, I sometimes struggle to reach my 5 servings of vegetables a day… So I’ve made a list of my top 5 tips to help YOU get your veggies in more easily. Let us know what you think!

  1. Add veggies to your breakfast – For many, breakfast is a piece of toast or a bowl of cereal… I see this as a missed opportunity for a veggie serving! Try adding baby spinach to your omelette, or grate some carrot into your porridge (like a carrot cake if you add some cinnamon and walnuts!).
  2. Hide those veggies in a smoothie –  Frozen cauliflower, spinach, or zucchini all work in a smoothie…and you won’t taste them, I promise!
  3. Pre-cut your veggies and store them in the fridge for snacking – You probably reach for the easiest option when hungry, so why not make the vegetables the easiest option!?
  4. Legumes count as veggies too – No it’s not cheating to count legumes in your 5-a-day! Add a tin of black beans to your taco mix, kidney beans to your soups, or chickpeas to your curry!
  5. Every little bit counts – Making pasta sauce? Instead of just using plain passata, try grating some carrot, celery, mushrooms, zucchini, and even the stalk of your broccoli, into your sauce!
